Surge terjadi pada kompresor turbo ketika kepala debit (discharge head) tidak dapat dipertahankan pada aliran hisap (suction flow) yang tersedia. Surge terjadi pada kombinasi spesifik dari head dan flow, seperti yang didefinisikan oleh kurva kinerja kompresor produsen. Satu atau lebih hal berikut yang dapat menyebabkan surge:

2. Parsial atau total pembalikan aliran melalui kompresor
3. Terganggu proses
4. Kerusakan mekanikal pada kompressor

There are bad suction system (saturated suction filter, valves too close, scale/deposit formed, more resistant than its design / cz modifying, and bad discharge system (disch. valves too close, etc). Those make the differentian press of suction v/s discharge too large, the reversal of flow will be formed. The reversal of flow reduces the discharge pressure or increases the suction pressure, thus allowing forward flow to resume again until the pressure rise again. This condition will continue until some change.
